A good hedge is the hardest-working plant on the section - privacy, shelter and a tidy boundary in one. But hedges only stay good with regular, correctly timed trimming, and the biggest mistakes we see are the same every year: cutting conifer hedges back past the green, and heavy trimming in the middle of nesting season. Here's the Waikato hedge owner's guide.

When to trim: timing by season

Most Waikato hedges want two trims a year: a main shape in late spring after the first flush, and a tidy-up in late summer or early autumn that leaves the hedge crisp through winter. Fast growers in good soil - griselinia especially - may want three.

Avoid heavy trimming in early-to-mid spring when birds are nesting - it's an offence to disturb native birds and genuinely common to find nests in hedges. And avoid hard cutbacks in frosty periods or drought, when the plant can't respond with new growth.

Know your species: how hard can you cut?

Griselinia, pittosporum, photinia (red robin), camellia and corokia are forgiving - they'll re-shoot from bare wood, so an overgrown hedge can usually be reduced hard and recovered over a season or two.

Conifer hedges - leylandii, macrocarpa, thuja - are the opposite. Most conifers will not regrow from brown, needle-free wood. Cut past the green shell and you're left with a permanent brown hole. Overgrown conifer hedges can only be reduced gradually, trimming to just inside the green each time - or accepted for what they are and replaced.

Shape matters more than people think

Hedges should be trimmed slightly narrower at the top than the base - a subtle 'A' profile. This lets light reach the lower foliage, which is what keeps a hedge dense to the ground. Hedges trimmed wider at the top shade their own base and go leggy and bare below - the most common structural fault in older hedges.

Boundary hedges and neighbours

Shared boundary hedges cause more neighbour friction than any other plant. The short version of your rights: you may trim growth that crosses onto your side back to the boundary line at your own cost, but you can't go over or through the fence to shape the neighbour's side without permission. The far better path is a conversation and splitting the cost of doing the whole hedge properly - it's cheaper per side and the hedge looks right from both.

When to call us in

DIY makes sense for hedges you can reach from the ground. Once ladders, height, road frontage or big reductions are involved, the economics change - we bring the gear, do it fast, leave the profile right for the species, and take every scrap of the trimmings away.

We trim hedges across Cambridge, Hamilton, Te Awamutu and the wider Waikato and Hauraki - one-off recoveries or a regular schedule so it never gets away on you. Call 022 167 1268 for a free quote.
