Land clearing covers everything from prepping a residential section for a new build to taking out a kilometre of aging shelterbelt on a lifestyle block. The approach, the machinery and the rules vary a lot with scale - here's how we tackle clearing jobs across Waikato and Hauraki, and what to sort out before work starts.
The three common jobs
Section clears: removing trees, stumps and vegetation ahead of building - usually done to 'buildable' standard, with stumps fully removed rather than ground, because foundations are going in. Coordination with your builder and earthworks contractor matters here.
Lifestyle block recovery: blocks that have gotten away on their owners - overgrown gullies, self-seeded wattle and willow, blackberry-swallowed fence lines. This is staged work: clear, mulch or burn windrows where permitted, then a plan to stop it coming back.
Shelterbelt removal: aging macrocarpa, pine or leyland belts that have outgrown their job. These are big, heavy trees in long rows - efficient to fell and process with the right gear, and the timber often has salvage or firewood value that offsets cost.
Check the rules before clearing
Most exotic scrub and planted vegetation can be cleared without consent, but three things need checking first: indigenous vegetation (clearing native bush or wetland margins can require consent - see our Waikato tree rules guide), waterway setbacks (regional rules protect stream banks and drains), and anything scheduled or protected in the district plan.
For rural blocks, also think about burn rules if you're planning to deal with slash on site - permits are seasonal and district-dependent.
What happens to the material
The material is often half the job. Options, roughly cheapest first: chip everything on site into mulch piles (great for tracks and gardens, no cartage), windrow and burn where permitted, stack salvageable timber as firewood or milling logs, or cart everything away - the most expensive route, priced by volume.
On bigger clears we'll usually recommend a mix: mulch the light stuff, save the good wood, cart the minimum.
What it costs
Clearing is priced on time and machinery: crew days, chipper capacity, and whether an excavator or grapple truck is needed. Ballpark thinking: a small residential section clear might be a day; a heavily overgrown lifestyle block or long shelterbelt is typically quoted after a walk-over, because density and access change everything.
