Why arborist mulch is better than bag mulch
Arborist woodchip is a mixture of chipped wood, bark, twigs and foliage from the tree work we do. Unlike decorative bark chip from a garden centre (which is often just bark), arborist chip contains a range of material that breaks down over time and genuinely improves your soil.
It suppresses weeds, retains moisture in summer, moderates soil temperature, and as the organic matter breaks down it feeds the soil with nutrients. It's what trees themselves use as mulch on a forest floor.
The only thing to be aware of: don't pile it directly against plant stems or tree trunks (leave a gap), and apply it around 75mm deep for best weed suppression.
How our free mulch offer works
When we're doing tree work across Waikato, we often generate more woodchip than a property needs or wants. Rather than paying to dispose of it, we offer it free to local gardeners and landowners.
You'll typically receive a full truck load - enough to mulch a substantial garden area. The timing depends on when we're in your area and what work we're doing, so there's some flexibility required on your end.
The chip is unprocessed and as-chipped - it's the real deal, not a refined product. You may get a mix of species depending on what we've been cutting.
