How Much Does Hedge Trimming Cost in NZ?

Straight-up answers from qualified Waikato arborists

Hedge trimming is priced on the size of the job - how long the hedge is, how tall, how overgrown it has got, and how easy it is to reach the top safely. Here's a straight-up guide to what affects the cost.

Small, regularly-maintained hedges - a boundary hedge you keep on top of, at a manageable height with good access - typically start from around $150–$300 for a trim and tidy.

Medium hedges, or ones that have been left a season or two, generally range from $300–$700. Height matters here: once we're working off ladders or a platform to reach the top safely, it takes longer.

Large, tall or long hedges - shelterbelts, mature boundary hedges, or anything needing height access and a lot of green-waste removal - can run from $700 to $2,000 or more depending on the run.

Green waste is the other big factor. A light trim chips down to almost nothing; reducing an overgrown hedge by a metre generates a lot of material, and hauling it away adds to the cost. We'll spell out whether removal is included in your quote.

Regular trims are cheaper than rescue jobs. A hedge kept in shape once or twice a year is quick; one left for years takes far longer, and can't always be brought back to size in a single cut without stressing the plant.
